🍔 NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY: Happy National Cheeseburger Day, LA! Did you know the cheeseburger was born right here locally in Pasadena? Back in 1924, a sixteen-year-old fry cook named Lionel Sternberger added a slice of cheese to a sizzling burger at his father’s spot, The Rite Spot, creating what would become an American classic. Fast forward to today, and LA’s love affair with the cheeseburger is stronger than ever.
To celebrate, here are some local deals around town:

🥪 LUNCHLY: MrBeast’s Feastables and Logan Paul/KSI’s Prime Hydration are teaming up to take on school cafeterias with a new brand called Lunchly. This grab-and-go lunchbox will feature healthier spins on classics like Turkey Stack ‘Ems, Pizza, and Fiesta Nachos, along with a Feastables bar and a Prime drink. Both creator-led brands have seen major success on retail shelves, and they’re now aiming to disrupt Lunchables’ reign by offering more nutritious options. While Prime has faced its share of controversies, and MrBeast’s empire is under scrutiny, kids will likely be excited about this star-powered lunch option—though parents might have some reservations.
🍽️ PARAMOUNT STUDIOS LOT: THIS WEEKEND - REMINDER: The L.A. Times Food Bowl returns with a three-day night market this weekend, offering tastings from top-tier restaurants right on Paramount Studios' iconic lot. Running Friday through Sunday, it's your chance to sample the best of LA’s food scene. Tickets start at $176.17.
OPENINGS
🇯🇵 ECHO PARK: Echo Park just got a new neighborhood gem with Izakaya Dongame, a cozy spot straight from Osaka that’s perfect for casual vibes and Japanese bites. Having opened last weekend, it’s the first U.S. outpost of the popular Osaka izakaya, bringing authentic small plates, yakitori, and a variety of sake to LA’s dining scene. The restaurant is already creating a buzz for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and classic izakaya experience — ideal for unwinding over drinks and bites after a long day.
🌮 EAST LA: Tijuanazo, the beloved taco chain from Tijuana, just opened its first U.S. location in East LA. Run by Aria Esquivel, daughter of the original founder, this spot is serving up all the Tijuana-style favorites, including carne asada and adobada tacos, mulitas, and tortas—all on handmade tortillas. The signature cilantro cream atop their al pastor is a standout, just like at her brother’s Taquería Frontera in Cypress Park. Plus, Tijuanazo has some unique offerings like the fantasmas, featuring meat wrapped in a grilled cheese crust. It’s already a hit, so check it out on Atlantic Boulevard!
🐷 HOLLYWOOD: Luv2Eat Express just opened next to the beloved Luv2Eat Thai Bistro on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. This new fast-casual concept offers a streamlined version of its sibling’s southern Thai menu, featuring steam table curries and stir-fries served with jasmine rice. Highlights include the moo hong, a Phuket-style braised pork belly, and their tangy yellow sour fish curry. Noodle soups are also on the menu, making it a perfect grab-and-go spot for authentic Thai flavors.
🍞 HOLLYWOOD: Mr. T Cafe just opened in Hollywood, led by renowned French pastry chef François Daubinet. Located next to the original Mr. T restaurant, this new daytime spot is all about decadent pastries and light savory options. Expect to find beautifully laminated croissants, hazelnut ganache tartlets dusted with gold (fittingly named the Gold Digger), and even a refined take on French toast. For a savory fix, the menu also features dishes like avocado toast, a burger, and Caesar salad.
🍣 HOLLYWOOD: Musume is the latest sushi bar to hit Sunset Blvd, bringing a modern flair to Hollywood’s sushi scene with its minimalist white interiors and an artistic approach to nigiri. Expect vibrant dishes like salmon truffle crudo, sweet shrimp nigiri topped with caviar, and luxurious Hokkaido uni handrolls adorned with gold leaf. For a non-sushi indulgence, their pepper-dusted wings served in a secret sauce are quickly becoming a fan favorite. This spot blends striking presentation with fresh flavors—perfect for a stylish LA night out.

COMMUNITY
☔️ CHILLY, LIGHT RAIN: Southern California is in for a weather rollercoaster this week as unseasonably cool temps and light rain move in, just days after record-breaking heat. Highs will dip 10 to 20 degrees below normal, with inland LA only hitting the mid-70s—quite the contrast from last week’s 110-degree scorcher. Light showers are expected from LA County to San Diego, while the Sierra Nevada braces for early-season snow. By Friday, however, the cool spell gives way to a warming trend, with weekend temps rising into the 80s and 90s across much of the region.
🐴 PONY RIDES: Nearly two years after Griffith Park’s beloved Pony Rides closed, LA city planners are considering new ideas for the vacant three-acre site. In a recent public hearing, residents weighed in on options ranging from a community garden and climbing wall to a museum highlighting indigenous history. Surprisingly, pony rides are still on the table despite previous animal cruelty concerns, sparking debate. Advocates like the Compton Cowboys argue for a revamped horse program that empowers underserved kids, while animal rights groups remain firmly opposed. Public feedback will shape the final proposal, heading next to the LA City Council.
💸 UCLA DONATION: UCLA’s Samueli School of Engineering and Cal Poly Pomona just landed a $1.6M grant from the California Education Learning Lab to help community college students thrive in engineering programs at four-year universities. Led by professors Greg Pottie and Richard Wesel, the project aims to break down barriers transfer students face, like missed internship opportunities and credit transfer issues. By boosting academic support and building stronger industry ties, the initiative hopes to create smoother transitions and better employment outcomes for these students in the engineering workforce.

DEVELOPMENT
🏡 SANTA MONICA: A former auto repair shop at 2307 Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica could soon transform into a seven-story mixed-use development. Coast Meridian Properties plans to replace the old structure with 69 one-bedroom apartments, 1,800 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, and parking for 59 vehicles. Designed by Arcaforma, the sleek, contemporary building will feature a rooftop deck and central courtyard. Leveraging density bonus incentives, a portion of the apartments will be offered at below-market rates. The project has garnered positive support from staff, moving it closer to approval.
🛒 BALDWIN VILLAGE: Costco is breaking new ground—literally—in South LA this week with a first-of-its-kind mixed-use development. Located on Coliseum Street in Baldwin Village, the new complex will feature 800 residential units and the neighborhood’s first Costco, which will include everything from fresh produce to a pharmacy. Of the apartments, 23% are dedicated to low-income housing, with the rest available for affordable and workforce housing. The project, spearheaded by Thrive Living, is the first under California’s AB-2011 law aimed at tackling the housing crisis and will bring thousands of construction jobs to the area.
🚲️ SUN VALLEY: Sun Valley just got a major bike-friendly upgrade. A new, four-mile stretch of the San Fernando Bike Path opened, completing a nearly ten-mile route connecting Sylmar to Burbank. The freshly finished path is a game-changer for cyclists, offering a green alternative to car travel and a healthy dose of outdoor recreation. With solar-powered lights, a bikeway bridge, and ADA ramps, it’s a win for eco-friendly transportation. City officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, celebrated the project, calling it a key step in building a greener, more connected LA.
🎡 SANTA MONICA: Cypress Equity Investments just unveiled a refreshed design for their mixed-use project on Santa Monica Boulevard, replacing a prior concept that hit a few snags. Now designed by Culver City’s OfficeUntitled, the two-building development features 288 residential units across eight stories with 2,700 square feet of ground-floor retail. The design mixes warm wood tones and painted plaster, with carved-out sections for added light and air. With rooftop decks and courtyards, the new plan aims to bring a more inviting, community feel. Santa Monica's Architectural Review Board is set to give it a conditional thumbs up.

💰️ SPOTIFY’S VIDEO MOVE: Spotify’s going all-in on video, offering creators seven-figure deals to bring their shows to its platform, according to Bloomberg. The move is part of its push to compete with YouTube in the digital ad space. Spotify's deals are based on a creator's influence, offering marketing support instead of exclusive rights. But, for creators, juggling content across platforms could be tricky without simultaneous upload tools. Despite the challenges, Spotify’s building on a long history of courting creators—remember the Joe Rogan deal?
👩⚕️ ANATOMY OF LIES: Peacock is gearing up to challenge Disney’s storytelling dominance with Anatomy of Lies, a new docuseries debuting October 15th. The series dives deep into the scandal surrounding former Grey's Anatomy writer Elisabeth Finch, who allegedly fabricated her medical history—including a battle with cancer—that fooled Hollywood for years. Based on Vanity Fair’s Scene Stealer article, Anatomy of Lies promises never-before-heard accounts from Finch’s closest contacts, unraveling how her deception infiltrated not only her personal life but also some of Grey's most emotional storylines. This one’s bound to make waves. Read original article from Vanity Fair, ‘Scene Stealer: The True Lies of Elisabeth Finch.’
🎞️ SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE: Lionsgate has just released the official trailer for Small Things Like These, starring and produced by Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy. Set to hit UK and Ireland theaters on November 1, and the U.S. on November 8 via Roadside Attractions, the film is based on Claire Keegan’s acclaimed novel. Murphy plays Bill Furlong, a coal merchant in 1985 Ireland who stumbles upon dark secrets hidden by the local convent. The discovery forces him to confront his past and the complicity of the town under the Catholic Church’s influence. Directed by Tim Mielants (Peaky Blinders), the film co-stars Emily Watson, who won a Silver Bear for her role at the Berlin Film Festival, alongside Eileen Walsh and Michelle Fairley.
🙍♂️ BROTHERS TRAILER: Prime Video is revving up for a wild ride with Brothers, a new buddy comedy starring Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage, set to hit theaters on October 10th before streaming on October 17th. Directed by Palm Springs breakout Max Barbakow, the film follows twin brothers Moke (Brolin), a reformed ex-con, and Jady (Dinklage), his reckless counterpart, on a chaotic road trip for one last heist. Along the way, they confront their overbearing mother (Glenn Close), the police (Brendan Fraser), and their fractured relationship.
🐶 DOG MAN: DreamWorks Animation just dropped the first trailer for Dog Man, bringing Dav Pilkey’s beloved canine cop to life on the big screen. Based on the spinoff from Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series, the film is set to hit theaters on January 31, 2025. Directed by Emmy-winner Peter Hastings (Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain), Dog Man promises a stylized CG adventure packed with heart and humor. The story follows a heroic half-dog, half-human officer as he battles the mischievous Petey the Cat—and maybe learns a thing or two about family along the way. Featuring voices from Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, and Ricky Gervais.

🧢 OHTANI’S 48/48: Shohei Ohtani's chase for baseball history continues as he snapped a rare slump with a homer in the Dodgers’ 11-9 loss to the Marlins. With 48 homers and 48 steals, he’s just two swings or two steals away from the elusive 50/50 mark—a feat no player has ever achieved. While the milestone seems to be on his mind, Ohtani denies any pressure, staying focused on quality at-bats. As for pitching? It’s a long shot, but Dave Roberts isn’t ruling it out for the postseason. Either way, LA fans are in for a wild finish.
🧢 MARLINS 11, DODGERS 9: The Dodgers fell short in a wild 11-9 loss to the Marlins last night, but Shohei Ohtani kept things exciting with his 48th homer of the season, inching closer to that elusive 50/50 milestone. Despite striking out three times, Ohtani’s long ball brought LA within striking distance, but Max Muncy’s ninth-inning heroics weren’t enough to close the gap. With the Dodgers still sitting 3.5 games ahead in the NL West, they’ll look to bounce back in tonight’s rematch. Landon Knack (2-4, 3.70 ERA) takes the mound against Miami’s Ryan Weathers (3-5, 3.55 ERA).
⚾️ ANGELS 5, WHITE SOX 0: The Angels snapped a six-game skid with a 5-0 shutout against the White Sox, thanks to rookie Eric Wagaman’s second straight game with a homer and a stellar outing from Griffin Canning. Canning tossed six scoreless innings, limiting Chicago to just three hits, while Wagaman’s 432-foot bomb added to the excitement at The Big A. With injuries piling up, the Halos will look to close out the series strong this afternoon. Jack Kochanowicz (2-5, 5.08 ERA) takes the mound as the Angels aim to keep the momentum going against the struggling White Sox.
