Because we are celebrating one month!
🎉 It is our one month anniversary at CuratedLA! 🥳
Wowza. A month ago CuratedLA was born, and has been growing since.
In celebration of our one month anniversary, an anniversary typically celebrated by middle school couples, we are going to take this upcoming Monday, President’s Day, off.
Thank you all for being apart of this community. We would be humbled if you celebrated our one-month with us by buying a big diamond ring. Or a donation, whichever is more feasible:

🥇Renters are #WINNING: Renters are starting to win political office in Los Angeles as more people feel priced out of homeownership, and housing costs rise. Despite renters representing a majority of households, they have not had much representation in the city's politics, with homeowners dominating office. However, the latest local elections saw a few renters winning significant seats, including Hugo Soto-Martínez, Lindsey Horvath, and Kenneth Mejia. The small but growing group of renter politicians is expected to increase in the future. With only 13% of L.A. County households able to afford the region’s $829,130 median home price, owning property is becoming increasingly unattainable for millennials, who now make up a significant portion of the renter population. Renters want more political representation and action, and their concerns are increasingly being heard
👷♀️Help connect LA highways, deadline today: The deadline to apply for the 710 stub working group, a group that will determine the future use of the former 710 freeway right-of-way property in West Pasadena, is today. The group will aim to rebuild and re-envision the area that was once a vibrant part of Pasadena, following an attempt to connect the Long Beach 710 and Foothill 210 freeways more than 50 years ago. Applications are due by 5:00pm today, and the working group will consist of thirteen members appointed by council members and the mayor, with at least two members who are descendants of displaced community members
🧺 Culver’s Public Citizen Market expands, Chinatown mini-doc released: Two new vendors will be added to the Citizen Public Market in Culver City next month. Ilé Bistro, a sister concept of Ilé LA that focuses on West African cooking and culture, will offer more casual and approachable dishes such as jollof rice and pepper soup, along with sweet palm wine popsicles and West African doughnuts for dessert. Uoichiba, a ten-seat counter, will be headed by Chef Liwei Liao, who will serve temaki handrolls, chirashi bowls, and sashimi using dry-aged fish from his Sherman Oaks fish market Joint Seafood. In other food news, Ten Seven Rolls, a family-run stand specializing in Vietnamese bánh cuốn, opened at San Gabriel's Blossom Market Hall, and a mini-doc was released about Philippe the Original in Chinatown, one of LA's legendary French dip pioneers
Yesterday, we asked: By 1930, Los Angeles produced a quarter of the world’s ___?
The answer: Oil.
By 1930, California was producing nearly one quarter of the world's oil output, and its population had grown to 1.2 million. In the decades that followed, many wells closed, but even more opened, surrounded by urban and suburban growth.
Today’s question: Everybody wants a piece of our great city, even countries. This said, how many countries (yes, countries) have ruled over Los Angeles?

We will have the answer in Tuesday’s newsletter as we are taking Monday off. #HAPPYONEMONTHBABE

⚡️ Creative minds share 50 years of Hollywood music and magic: In Beverly Hills, a colossal collaboration of creative minds took place as legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg and renowned composer John Williams convened at an American Cinematheque gathering dubbed 50 Years of Music and Movies. Naturally, the focus was on Williams' iconic musical compositions and Spielberg's blockbuster films. Deadline has an eight-minute exclusive video from Spielberg and Williams’ conversation
🚓 A female led Starsky & Hutch: Fox is working on a female-led modern remake of the 70s cop show Starsky & Hutch, produced by Sony Pictures Television. The show will follow two female detectives, Sasha Starsky and Nicole Hutchinson, solving crimes and trying to solve the mystery of who sent their fathers to prison for a crime they didn't commit. Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn expects to have at least two scripts before deciding whether to move forward with the project. In the original series, David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser starred as the title characters, with Antonio Fargas as their informant Huggy Bear and a cherry-red Ford Gran Torino with a white stripe across its sides and roof. The show is one of several projects in Fox's development pipeline, along with a medical drama titled Doc and Marc Cherry's Jenny Is a Weapon
