HEADLINES
📜 PLASTIC BAGS: Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a new law banning heavyweight reusable plastic bags at checkout lines across California, closing a loophole that had allowed plastic waste to surge despite the state’s 2014 ban on single-use bags. Starting in 2026, grocery stores will no longer offer these thicker plastic bags, which contributed to a 47% increase in plastic bag waste. The move, celebrated by environmentalists, is seen as a victory for ocean wildlife and a step toward reducing California's plastic pollution. Expect stricter rules on recycled paper bags by 2028. 🐇

🧑🚒 LINE FIRE: Firefighters are making significant progress in containing three major wildfires across SoCal, thanks to cooler weather and increased humidity. The Bridge fire, the largest, has burned over 54,000 acres but is now 69% contained. The Line fire, which is 60% contained, has led to an arson arrest, with the suspect facing serious charges. Meanwhile, the Airport fire, caused by heavy equipment, is now 74% contained. While the blazes have scorched over 117,000 acres, destroyed homes, and led to 24 injuries, crews are steadily gaining the upper hand.
📜 LB LAW: Governor Gavin Newsom just signed Assembly Bill 2553 into law. Authored by Assemblywoman Laura Friedman, 2553 expands the ban on requiring parking spaces at developments near transit hubs. This means more areas in Long Beach—think the harborfront, CSULB, and Alamitos Bay—will qualify for parking-free developments. While it aims to ease the state’s housing crisis by cutting construction costs and boosting affordable housing, locals may need to adjust to fewer parking spots. 🐇
🏡 HOUSING LAWS: Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a new package of housing bills aimed at tackling California's ongoing affordability crisis. Among the 32 bills, seven were signed on Thursday, including measures to streamline approval for housing projects and boost low-income housing options. Notably, AB 2011, which fast-tracks housing on commercial land, has already seen its first project in LA—a Baldwin Village development featuring 800 apartments atop a Costco. 🐇

DEVELOPMENT
🏗️ CULVER CITY: Century City’s skyline is getting a major upgrade. JMB Realty's Century City Center is rising at the iconic Avenue of the Stars and Constellation Boulevard intersection, with a sleek 37-story tower set to deliver 730,000 square feet of office space by 2026. Despite the 2024 office market jitters, big players like CAA and Clearlake Capital are already locked in, taking up a combined 550,000 square feet. With stunning designs by Johnson Fain and Bjarke Ingels, plus two acres of gardens, this project is set to redefine Century City's office scene—just in time for the new Metro D Line station.
🏡 HARVARD HEIGHTS: The ‘Steps on St. Andrews’ affordable housing project has officially broken ground in Harvard Heights, bringing nineteen units of permanent supportive housing for veterans. Developed by Holos Communities and designed by LOHA, the project combines the restoration of a historic craftsman home into eight apartments with the construction of a new three-story, twelve-unit building at the rear. Despite zoning restrictions, the project, built on public land, will preserve the original home’s charm while providing much-needed housing. The People Concern will offer onsite services, with funding from various public and private sources. Please visit The Steps on St. Andrews’ website for more information on affordable housing.
🚲️ LONG BEACH: Pedestrians and cyclists in Long Beach’s Wrigley neighborhood are about to see some big improvements. Thanks to a $25m federal grant, Pacific Avenue is getting a major safety upgrade, including protected bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, and new transit stops. Spearheaded by Rep. Nanette Barragán and supported by Mayor Rex Richardson, the project will cover two miles between PCH and Wardlow Road. It’s all part of Long Beach’s push for a more bike-friendly city by 2040, and the benefits will connect residents to key spots like schools, parks, and transit hubs.
🏡 WESTWOOD: A sleek new residential project is coming to Westwood at 1402 South Veteran Avenue. Spearheaded by developer Brennen Hakimian, this six-story, 23-unit building will replace a 1940s apartment structure. Designed by Warren Techentin Architecture, the project will feature a mix of units ranging from one to six bedrooms, along with a two-level underground garage. With Transit Oriented Communities incentives, three of the units will be designated for extremely low-income households. Expect modern touches like perforated metal screens, a rear patio, and a rooftop deck, just steps from the Westwood Recreation Center.

BUSINESS
🛒 KROGER X ALBERTSONS: The Kroger-Albertsons merger faces a pivotal moment as the FTC's attempt to block the deal heads to federal court. Kroger argues the merger is essential to compete with Walmart, but testimony revealed price hikes and raised doubts about potential consumer benefits. Labor competition also emerged as a key issue, with unions expressing concern over diminished worker leverage. While Judge Adrienne Nelson's decision is still pending, further legal battles loom in Washington state over the sale of stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers. With $864m already invested, the companies may eventually abandon the merger if litigation drags on.
💼 CALI + EXXON LAWSUIT: California is taking ExxonMobil to court in a groundbreaking lawsuit, accusing the oil giant of greenwashing the potential of plastic recycling. Attorney General Rob Bonta claims ExxonMobil misled the public for decades, fueling a plastic pollution crisis that’s cost the state billions. The suit demands an end to deceptive practices and hefty penalties, along with a fund to address environmental damage. It’s a big move in the fight against plastic waste, following Bonta’s years-long investigation into the fossil fuel industry’s environmental impact.

🎤 SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: Saturday Night Live is back for its milestone 50th season, and LA has even more reason to tune in! Among the fresh faces gracing Studio 8H is LA’s very own Jane Wickline. Hailing from the sunny West Coast, she’s bringing some LA flavor to the iconic NYC stage. Catch her debut this Saturday as SNL kicks off what’s sure to be a legendary season with this Saturday’s host, Jean Smart, and musical guest, Jelly Roll.
🪲 KING OF BOX OFFICE: Beetlejuice has officially risen from the dead, crossing $300m globally, but Tim Burton’s sequel almost became another streaming casualty. Warner Bros., grappling with their worst summer since 1982, considered sending the $147m film straight to Max. Burton wasn’t having it. The studio gave him a challenge: slash the budget to under $100m or lose the big-screen release. Cue two months of cost-cutting magic, where Burton and WME’s Mike Simpson convinced stars like Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder to bet on backend profits and secured juicy tax breaks. The result? A $99m budget and a green light. Now, as Beetlejuice racks up box office wins, Burton’s fight for theaters is a major talking point, giving Warner Bros. a much-needed win in the streaming vs. theatrical battle.
🏴 NETFLIX: Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos just hit London to flex the streamer’s growing UK empire: $6b invested since 2020, one hundred active productions, and four global hits shot in Britain. Netflix is also cozying up to local broadcasters, co-producing projects and letting Brits keep most IP rights. But not everyone’s impressed—UK producers are sweating over shifting deal structures, fearing Netflix's big-player favoritism and tighter control over shows long-term. The Baby Reindeer controversy only fanned the flames, as Netflix’s loose take on fact vs. fiction clashed with Britain's strict broadcasting rules. Sarandos brushed it off as a uniquely British debate, leaving local execs uneasy about Netflix’s growing influence. It’s a delicate dance between embracing Netflix’s cash and safeguarding UK creative independence.

🐏 RAMS 27, 49ERS 24: The Rams pulled off a thrilling 27-24 comeback win against the 49ers at SoFi, giving Inglewood fans a serious adrenaline rush. Rookie kicker Joshua Karty sealed the deal with a 37-yard field goal with just two seconds left. Kyren Williams was on fire with three touchdowns, leading the Rams (1-2) as they erased a 14-point deficit. Matthew Stafford hit Tutu Atwell with a crucial 50-yard pass late in the fourth, setting up Williams' game-tying score. The Rams are now 2-0 against their NFC West rivals after a rough 10-game stretch. Up next? They’re headed to Chicago.
🧢 DODGERS 6, ROCKIES 5: Dodger Stadium was buzzing as Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts delivered back-to-back ninth-inning bombs, lifting the Dodgers to a thrilling 6-5 win over the Rockies. Ohtani tied it with his 53rd homer, followed by Betts’ walk-off shot, keeping L.A. three games ahead in the NL West. Yoshinobu Yamamoto struggled early, but the Dodgers' bullpen racked up 17 strikeouts to give the team a chance to rally. With a huge series against the Padres up next at Chavez Ravine, the Dodgers are holding tight to their division lead as October approaches.
⚡️ STEELERS 20, CHARGERS 10: The Chargers faced a tough 20-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, as injuries piled up and the offense struggled late in the game. Justin Herbert, battling a right ankle injury, was pulled in the third quarter after being sacked, leaving backup Taylor Heinicke to face a relentless Steelers defense. Despite a strong connection between Herbert and rookie Quentin Johnston for a touchdown, the Chargers couldn’t keep up, managing just 168 total yards. Joey Bosa also aggravated a hip injury, adding to the team’s challenges. Next up, the Chargers head home to SoFi Stadium for a crucial AFC West showdown against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, where they’ll aim to snap a five-game losing streak to their division rival.
🏈 LSU 34, UCLA 17: UCLA fought hard in the Louisiana heat, but LSU’s second-half surge handed the Bruins a tough 34-17 loss. Garrett Nussmeier and the Tigers outscored UCLA 17-0 after halftime, despite strong early plays from Bruins QB Ethan Garbers, who threw for 281 yards and two TDs. The Bruins’ resilience was on full display after a rough loss to Indiana, and head coach DeShaun Foster praised their grit, but it wasn’t enough to overcome LSU’s second-half push. Now, UCLA returns to the Rose Bowl for a huge matchup as they open Big Ten play against No. 9 Oregon this Saturday. Expect a heated showdown as the Bruins aim to bounce back and defend their turf.
🏈 MICHIGAN 27, USC 24: USC’s Big Ten debut was a heartbreaker, with the Trojans falling 27-24 to Michigan after a last-minute Wolverines touchdown. Despite a strong effort from QB Miller Moss, who threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns, including a go-ahead strike to Ja’Kobi Lane in the fourth quarter, USC’s defense couldn’t hold the line in the final moments. Woody Marks had a standout game, rushing for 100 yards, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Michigan’s late-game heroics. Now, USC looks to bounce back at home this Saturday as they host Wisconsin at the Coliseum. It’s a must-win game as the Trojans aim to regroup and keep their Big Ten campaign on track.
🏄♀️ NISSAN SUPER GIRL: Eden Walla just made waves—literally—at the 2024 Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro in Oceanside, claiming victory as the youngest champion in event history at just 15. The San Clemente native edged out Tahiti's Kiara Goold in a dramatic all-teen Final, marking her first-ever QS Final appearance. Walla's backhand dominance secured a 7.33 in challenging conditions, solidifying her spot as the new North America QS leader. With sharp instincts and fierce determination, Walla is definitely a rising star to watch in women’s surfing. 💌
